Mashups of the Week: GZA & Johnny Cash

Technically this probably lands closer to a remix than a mashup, but considering the source it’s not a stretch to include it in this week’s post. The Hood Internet was recently asked by Wu-Tang’s GZA to put a spin on Mando Diao’s “Dance With Somebody” in order to appropriate the track for some fresh lyrics he wanted to lay down. Edmonton’s poet laureate Cadence Weapon jumps in for a few bars, capping off what is definitely a contender for mashup, er… remix of the year.

Sweden’s ever-consistent Copycat returns this week with a track he explains is “Not as horrible as the sources may imply.” Agreed! I challenge anyone to connect the dots between Billy Idol, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Madonna, Bon Jovi & the Black Eyed Peas and find the end result come anywhere close to this.
Pheugo is back with a song that parallels the mashup that lobsterdust recently produced, the difference being a backing track consisting of Johnny Cash’s rendition of “Hurt.” Both are fantastic.

This past week I had a few words with one of my all-time favorite bootleggers and one half of a duo that has created one of my favorite mashups in recent years. I highly suggest digging a bit deeper into their respective back-catalogs.
