Retribution Gospel Choir to play 501 Club, release “2”

It’s been a busy month for Alan Sparhawk, and it doesn’t look things are going to slow down any time soon. In addition to having announced that Low will be performing a series of select fall/spring dates, his Retribution Gospel Choir is now deep in the production of its sophomore release 2. Having recently signed to Sub Pop, the Duluth-based group, which also includes drummer Eric Pollard and Low bassist Steve Garrington, is prepping the album for a January 26, 2010 release.
While the band’s 2008’s self-titled debut, and subsequent tours supporting such heavyweights as Wilco and the Meat Puppets, came in Low’s absence, Sparhawk doesn’t want the project to be looked at as something temporary to occupy his time in between Low records. Speaking of the RGC (and the Black-Eyed Snakes), Sparhawk recently told Linescratchers, “I don’t look at them as side bands.” He continued, “The other guys in the band really challenge my abilities and make me play in ways I didn’t know were in me.”
Following a series of European dates, the Retribution Gospel Choir will be returning to Minneapolis for a highly anticipated show in the intimate surroundings of the 501 Club this coming December 19.
